maybe a way to chose from images type ( *.gif or *.jpg or what ever)
to display the counters.

this for people that don't have

You can choose what image type you want to use.
This is in the setup options. It's currently set to auto, but you can change it to jpeg, gif or png.
I think you still have to have freetype support running though.

turn this off (false) and you'll be able to still use built-in (=ugly) fonts with a GD-only PHP build.

Anyway, I'm thinking about implementing a third possibility, an image-only counter display that won't use any GD. This is pretty much on the bottom of my todo-list, tough.
